Healthy Orange Julius

Super easy 4 ingredient Orange Julius. Plus, it doesn't have any added sugar!

Having a blender again is seriously the best.

(By the way, I was so excited to have a smoothie again when we got back to the US and on the way home from the airport, my mom casually mentioned that her blender wasn't working. I tried not to burst into tears, but that might have also been the crazy jet-lag working on me).

Fortunately, her blender got replaced while I was there and then I came home to my beloved Blendtec, so my life has plenty of smoothies in it again.

When I was a kid, we made a lot of orange juliuses because we generally had all the ingredients around for it, and it was quick and delicious.

But then as an adult I looked at all the recipes and they had a half cup of sugar or so in them and . . . I like an orange julius but if I'm eating half a cup of sugar, it darn well better be a cookie, not a smoothie.

This version is just as good, I think, and the bananas make it creamy and sweet without adding a bunch of sugar.  And it's super fast and easy, which is basically what I need in my life right now.

Healthy Orange Julius

makes 1 large or 2 small servings

6 ounces frozen orange juice concentrate
1 peeled banana, frozen
1 - 1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Serve immediately.

(If you use 1 cup of milk, it'll be thick enough to eat with a spoon. With 1 1/2 cups of milk, you can drink it with a straw).

  1. Sounds yummy. I wonder how it would work with frozen berries instead of OJ concentrate?

  2. Yum! As soon as I get frozen oj, I am making this! I've been craving a smoothie anyway... you must have been reading my mind! And I love Orange Julius! Thank you for giving me a treat to look forward to!

  3. Which Blentec blender do you have? I've wanted a high powered blender so bad, but can't bring myself to pay that much money! Did you just cave and pay for it? Do you have any suggestions?

    1. I have the Wild Side designer one. We got it as a gift last Christmas, so frankly, I've only used it for a few months and then it sat in storage for eight months while we were out of the country. Have you looked into a refurbished one?

  4. my blender just died! after only 2 years and right in the middle of a smoothie i was making. i don't know how to survive w/o my breakfast smoothies.

do you think the blendtec is worth the price? spencer and i are looking into maybe splurging for that.

  5. This is the basic recipe I use too! The banana really helps. I was never much of a smoothie person but a good blender changes things.

  6. I can only imagine how excited you are to have your food prep things back! This orange julius looks so yummy! And I like that you use a banana to counteract the orange taste which I typically think is usually overwhelming in orange julius.
