Raiding My Sister's Closet: One Piece, Five Ways

Over the last few months, I feel like I really stepped up my style.

When I first posted about this shirt in June, just wearing it with jeans felt pretty far outside of my comfort zone. The shirt was bright! And collared! (Seriously, I sound like the most gigantic wimp).

Now I look at it with just jeans and think, "Mmm, betta not."

Shirt: Old Navy // Jeans: Target // Shoes: Old Navy

I mean, it's not bad. But this shirt doesn't scare me like it used to.

When we decided to do One Piece, Five Ways for this edition of Raiding My Sister's Closet, I easily came up with five different ways to wear it.

(My hair, though? Always the same. I lack hair variety skills. Can't bring myself to care. Long hair is wasted on me).

Let's do this thing.

Pants: Forever 21 // Vest: Gift from my mom // Shoes: DSW // Necklace: r-ki-tekt

The blue pants make an appearance again! I like the bright pants instead of just blue jeans, and the black vest tones it all down a little.

Dress: LOFT //  Heels: Nine West // Bracelet: c/o Oasap

I love this stretchy dress (it's not maternity, but I can wear it for ages when I'm pregnant), but the solid color means that the colorful plaid shirt helps punch it up a bit. Also, the dressy shoes and big bracelet help counteract the casualness of the the shirt.

Jeans: Gap // Lace Top: c/o SheInside // Shoes: DSW

Wearing a plaid shirt unbuttoned makes me think 90s!, but pairing it with a fitted lace top keeps it from being too grunge. Plus, the lace adds a little texture.

Dress: DownEast Basics //  Tights: c/o Choies // Boots: c/o Choies // Bracelets: c/o Persunmall (here and here)

I have gotten so much mileage out of this dress (thanks, Mom!). I love the contrast of the bright plaid with the gray and black.

Jeans: Gap // Polka-dot shirt: c/o Oasap

I stole this shirt pattern-mixing idea from Merrick (seriously, I owe all my better dressing to her - a friend asked me recently what style blogs I read and I was like, "Um . . .Merrick's") when she did this ultra-brilliant post about stepping up your basic outfits

Also, my shoe is untied. It's hard to be an adult, sometimes.

See what Merrick and Landen picked to mix five ways:

  1. I'm loving 1, 3, and 5. That shirt is so cute and versatile! And those shoes - seriously, I need to get myself to the store and try them on. Love!

    1. They seriously are my go-to shoes right now. I wear them ALL the time.

  2. I love your captions about adding lace to offset the grungy look, wearing dressy shoes to keep the outfit from being too casual, etc, etc. You're a pro and I'm so proud :)

  3. This is so great because I have this exact same shirt!

  4. Love your outfits! I have been looking everywhere for a black and white polka-dotted button down, and I totally followed your link and bought it. Thank you! Also, maybe this isn't an issue for you now that your baby is getting older, but how much thought do you give to nursing when you choose your outfits? (This goes for Merrick, too!)

    1. I LOVE that shirt. In fact, the other day, when I was wearing it for (no kidding) the fourth day in a row, my printer ink splattered all over the front of it. No amount of hairspray, rubbing alcohol or bleach would get it out, so I just ordered a new one.

And, I definitely have to dress for nursing (although not so much anymore, happily). Very much a consideration. Dresses? Only just starting to come back into my life.

  5. What great eye contact! Haha. Also, I love that shirt, and I would totally wear it with jeans and only ever jeans, because that is my level of commitment. Kudos to you for being creative.

  6. All of these looks look SO good with that shirt! I wish I had a sister's closet to raid. Dang it!

Thanks for joining the link up!

  7. I like getting ideas from you and Merrick. But I seriously cracked up at your comment about your hair! I need help in the fashion category (looked at my closet a week ago and realized I only had 3 shirts with any sort of pattern - otherwise solid colors and jeans), but my saving grace is my hair. Every day is different. Maybe I'll start posting pictures so I can inspire you as much as you inspire me. :) Also check out I use it a lot for ideas.

I try to respond to most comments, so it will make my day if your email address is linked in your profile. If you're not sure if it's linked, you can add it by following these instructions.
