The Subscription Box I'm Totally Loving

Have you tried Rocksbox? It's the best subscription box I've tried! (Get a free month with the code everydayreadingxoxo)

Since I wrote a post about Blue Apron, I figured I might as well write about a subscription box I do like.

(Like my Blue Apron experience, I got a free trial and this isn't a sponsored post. Rocksbox does have a referral program, so if you use my code everydayreadingxoxo for a free month, I'll get some account credit. Consider yourself adequately disclosed).

I was skeptical of yet another subscription service (seriously, how many are there out there now?), but I've been completely won over by it.

Here's how it works:

  1. You fill out a style profile (basically a quick little quiz where you pick the items and outfits you like so they can get a feel for your style) and add items to your wishlist.
  2. You pay $19 a month.
  3. You get a box of three pieces of jewelry from various designers.
  4. Whenever you're ready, you send back your box and you get a new set of three.
  5. If you want to keep anything from your box, you can buy it a discount.

This works really well for my jewelry personality - I wear the same item or two over and over and over again, and then I move on to something new. I'll wear my three pieces for a week or two or three and then I'm ready to move on.

It's also really nice to be wearing some better quality jewelry than what you'd buy at Target or Forever 21 (this from the person who is currently daily wearing a pair of rose gold studs from Old Navy that were on clearance for $1.99). The metal isn't turning green or black, irritating my skin, and they just look obviously nicer. And if you decide to buy something from your box, you get a reasonably good discount - usually $10-15 - off, so you can build up a nicer collection of jewelry without spending a fortune and you already know if you'll wear it or not.

Rocksbox has really helped me figure out more what I like, while simultaneously pushing me to try new things. Like the Kendra Scott earrings in my most recent box? I would absolutely never have picked those out (in fact, when they arrived, I was not thrilled with them). But I figured I'd wear them at least once before sending them back and . . .  what do you know? I love them. They're super versatile, add some fun pop to a plain outfit, and are just a little out of the ordinary. It's like they have professionals picking these items or something.

And it's just so fun to get a box of jewelry in the mail every few weeks. I seriously feel giddy when my box arrives, even if I've already peeked online to see what they've shipped in my latest box.

You can leave feedback on your items so they get better at picking things you like (and it's nice to think through why exactly you did or didn't love what they sent - was it too flashy? Too heavy? Too boring? Too long or short?)

I love that there's no limit to how many boxes you can get in a month. I hate that with other subscription services that, if you don't like what you get, you have to wait until the next month to get something new.

And the turnaround is super fast. Every box comes with a return label at the bottom of the box, so you can slap the new sticker on and toss it in the mail. And then as soon as the tracking number is activated by the post office, they send out your new box. Usually, mine has shipped out within 24 hours of putting the old box in the mail.

Also, there isn't the same pressure to buy like I feel like Stitch Fix has (since you get a discount if you buy everything - I've never used Stitch Fix, so take my opinion for what it's worth (nothing)). You DO get $10 of credit every month toward any items you purchase and if you don't use it, it goes away, so I suppose that's incentive to buy something, but it doesn't feel as pushy to me.

My only complaint is that you can only work in sets of three. You can't send back two items you don't love and keep one item indefinitely. You always have to send back all three items to get a new box unless you want to buy some of the items (in which case, you just send back the items you don't want to buy).

Their referral program is also excellent - every month, you can invite 3 friends to try a free month and if they sign up you get $25 of credit (for a max of $75) toward any items you want to purchase from your box. As soon as your friend's box ships, even if they cancel their subscription and never spend a dime, you get that credit. So you can invite people to try it without pushing them to spend money for your benefit. Score. And unlike your $10 a month, that referral credit never expires so you can let it accrue until you have something from your box you really want to keep instead of sending back.

AND, if you want to try it out, you can use my code everydayreadingxoxo for a free month's trial. It'll make you put in your credit card info but won't charge you until the month is up.

Whenever I try out something for free that converts to a paying account (say, Netflix or Amazon Prime), I put a reminder in Google Calendar to pop up a day or two before the free trial ends and then also the day it ends so that I can cancel before I get charged. Also, I can't speak for Rocksbox, but with other services, if I've forgotten to cancel, if I call a day or two later, they've always happily refunded me and canceled the service as long as I haven't used it yet.

Anyway, if you try it out, I'd love to hear what you think. And probably let me know if you have any other subscription services you are a fan of because after this and Blue Apron, I pretty much want to try every subscription ever.

Top: LOFT via Twice
Jeans: Aeropostale
Sandals: Sam Edelman from Shopbop
Ring: Sophie Harper via Rocksbox
Necklace: Gorjana via Rocksbox (available here)

  1. I need that shirt in my life! I love the colors! I got asked to try Rocksbox and never went through all the steps to do it, but I've heard so many people raving about it lately that I think I'm going to have to give it a try!

  2. Could you give an idea of what prices are for buying items? I know it differs based on the item, but a range would be helpful. :) Thanks!

    1. Generally between $30-50. The cheapest I've ever had was a ring for $25 and the most expensive was a necklace for $92. Hope that's helpful!

  3. Okay. You have convinced me! I've been watching this since last year so I may as well take a free plunge.

  4. Great top!
You heard about Twice, right? So sad.

  5. Try le tote. Super similar but it's $50 a month. 2 pieces of jewelry, 3 items of clothing (such as 2 tops and a skirt). It's a bit dressier for a sahm but I felt so stylish the 3 months I did it, tried clothes and jewelry that I would have never bought myself and totally stopped spending money on meaningless splurges. I cancelled it when I got pregnant but would love to do it again when I am like 6-9 months post partum. Also they dry clean all the clothes for you so you can wear nicer clothes without the laundry.

  6. I've tried birchbox because of my great love of makeup/skin care, but I got too many things I didn't like, and it just started to seem wasteful.

  7. I actually LOVE getting subscription boxes! I wrote a whole post about the ones I was getting at one point. Then I founded my own. HAHA! This is one I was kind of skeptical about, but I think I'll try it out. Thanks!

  8. Super cute sandals! Did you really pay $130 for them?? And I've always thought the boxes sound fun, most of them are just more than I want to pay, though this one isn't bad. And it's true, there are a bazillion different ones.

    1. They were on sale for $90 and I had a bunch of store credit for Shopbop from a project I did last fall. I didn't have ANY sandals (my staples from last year are on their last last leg), so I felt like I could justify splurging a little. Especially in Arizona where sandals are a year-round shoe.

  9. You have convinced me to try out Rocksbox. I've been seeing this all over Instagram, but I'm going to take the plunge this morning. A box I am loving is Mommy Mailbox. I have two small blog posts and YouTube videos up about them. It's about $30 a month. But so far I have been so happy with it. Check them out :)
