Raiding My Sister's Closet: Sandals Dressed Up and Dressed Down

Remember how in my Stuck On the Beach post, I included those beach umbrellas from IKEA?

We stopped by our local IKEA the next day, and when my husband asked an employee where to find them, she said, "Oh, those were a summer item, so we're not stocking them anymore."

You guys, THIS WAS JULY 2ND. In my world, the first week of July still counts as summer. (My brain seriously exploded when Bart related this incident to me. I was, unsurprisingly, spinning Ella around and around in those little egg pod chairs IKEA sells).

This story is basically to say that if this were a corporate blog, we'd be posting about winter coats dressed up and down today, because obviously sandals are a summer item, and summer is all but finished in JULY (I'm so not over this).

Happily, we're complete non-professionals and can go on our merry sandal-wearing way for all of July, and possibly even into August. Possibly. I mean, I'm not an extremist or anything.

Sandals dressed down (aka, the kind of thing I wear every day):

Shorts: Old Navy // Shirt: H&M // Sandals: Old Navy // Bracelet: Gift from my Mom

Doesn't that bracelet look like you should be at the beach? Instead of unpacking boxes? Too bad, bracelet.

And sandals dressed up:
Shirt: Shade // Skirt: Ross // Polka-dot Shirt: Forever 21
Sandals: Old Navy // Bracelet: Gift from Landen

Also, this polka-dot top? So far out of my comfort zone. I never would have given it a second look on the display table. But my mom convinced me to try it on when she was in town and. . . what do you know? I love it. Proof that, as usual, my mom is way better at dressing me than I am.

Check out Merrick and Landen's completely unseasonal sandal outfits, too (Nope. Not letting it go):

  1. I love these outfits! I would have never picked the polka dot top up off of the table, either, but it looks FANTASTIC on you. And I am in total agreement with you regarding the approach to "seasonal" items. I am sure that, in the retail world, we will soon be seeing Halloween items adorning the aisles.

  2. I am with you on seasonal things. We went looking for warm footie jammies in January (my son finally grew! Yay!) and were told they were seasonal. It was literally snowing at the time. Lame.

  3. When I saw that polka dot top, the first thing I thought was, "Mom probably picked that out." I can spot your comfort zone from a mile away :)

  4. Ha! I sprinted to Ikea THE VERY DAY of your blog post and they were already sold out! When I inquired I got the same answer you did! I stand in solidarity with you. Also, lesson learned. I'll be the first in line at Ikea on January 1st for my beach umbrella!

  5. The same thing happened when I went to Walmart in April in Texas to buy bubbles. There were no bubbles in the entire store because bubbles are a summer item and the 85 degree weather in Houston didn't count as summer in Walmart world.

And since when do kids only play with bubbles in the summer?

  6. So where is that gorgeous stone wall behind you? In NC?
I absolutely agree with you about the seasons. People need beach umbrellas and bathing suits when the temperatures are sizzling! I hate it when I go shopping for my daughter's birthday in mid-October and the stores are already decorated for Christmas! Nordstrom's has the right idea in that anyway since they won't decorate until after Thanksgiving.

  8. I once went to the store In search of thermal underwear. In January, when it was twelve degrees. Seasonal. Lame.

Last year my son had to suffer in too small snowboots because he outgrew his, it was still cold, and no store had them any more.

    Retail is ridiculous.
