Yesterday, Ella and I flew to Las Vegas to spend a week with my family.

Bart has a really busy couple of weeks at work, so we figured we'd escape the freezing winter of Texas (oh, wait. Never mind about the freezing and winter part. I was wearing shorts while I packed and our apartment got up to 84 degrees on Sunday evening before I finally turned the AC back on) and enjoy some time with my parents and Crawford.

Ella took the world's most pathetic nap yesterday morning, which made me extremely nervous about the plane flight. And then, of course, the flight ended up being completely full (three standby passengers made it on, so there wasn't a seat anywhere), so I pretty much just wished I could teleport.

But then, she was delightful. She smiled and laughed and ate so many packs of airplane snack mix that I got through nearly 30 pages of my book while she sat on my lap rearranging pretzels and tiny crackers on the tray. I couldn't have asked for her to be better, especially considering that she'd been up for over six hours by the time we landed.

Which meant that when we arrived back at my parents' house, she went straight down for a nap that turned into bedtime (which also meant she woke up at 4:40 this morning, after twelve and a half hours of sleep).

This morning we did a little video chat with Bart (Ella tried to feed him Cheerios through the monitor). Aside from missing him, I am so happy to be here. It's nice to have the whole week stretching ahead of me with no responsibilities aside from making sure my child doesn't terrorize the cat (HE will be happy when we clear out at the end of the week).

  1. Not being a mother, I can't say I fully understand, but I have been on planes before when some poor mother is trying to deal with a wiggly, crying kid and everyone is glaring at her. I feel so bad. I'm glad Ella was good for you.

  2. Jack and I are flying home in 2 weeks and I am terrified that a) he will have inherited his mother's ears which are intolerant of altitude, b) he will scream and be "that child" - the inconsolable one that makes the other passengers want to rip their hair out, or c) get pertussis.

  3. That is always the biggest relief when they are good on the plane! Sorry about the 4:45 wake up call today though, yikes.

  4. I love that she tried to feed her Dad Cheerios through the screen! So adorable!

  5. Nat has only met one cat in his life, and he was mildly obsessed with her. That poor creature valiantly endured "petting" (which really was grabbing her fur and pawing her face) and squeals without so much as a hiss in response. Amazing.

    Have a great visit!

I love that belt - so cute!

    lace, etc.

  6. How fun!!! Seriously flying can be stressful in general let alone with a toddler. LET ALONE by your self!!! I would be nerves too especially if they didn't get that nap you so desperately hoped for. I was trying to envision what it would be like for me while I was reading this, and I think you are brave!

  7. Only further proof that your child is, in fact, The Cute. Enjoy Vegas!!!

  8. Glad Ella was so good on the plane! Next week Jilly and I are taking a flight from Sacramento to Atlanta and just thinking about it makes me want to curl up and die. Hopefully there will be lots and lots and lots of airplane snack mix to keep her occupied for 5 1/2 hours!

    Have a wonderful trip!

  9. That sounds fun! Say hi to the family from me. Enjoy your time with your family, I really miss being able to do that.

  10. Have so much fun on your trip! I've been on a vacation a month schedule for awhile and reading this makes me think "why didn't I plan anything for November?"

  11. That's fun. I am glad you got to go visit your family. What a blessing that Ella was a sweetheart on the plane. I never have taken any of mine on a plane alone.
