My Favorite Time of Day

Now that the weather is warming up (well, most days) and the sun comes up earlier, Bart and I have started walking (and occasionally running) in the mornings together.

While our apartment is not particularly nice, the neighborhood is lovely, full of beautiful houses and quiet streets, and at six a.m., the roads are silent and still.

It's become one of my favorite parts of the day. We do nearly three miles, so we're going pretty quickly in order to be home in time to shower, dress, eat breakfast, and get out the door in a timely manner. I love the long uninterrupted stretch of time to talk to Bart. We talk about inane things like the insane number of CR-Vs in Boston and what houses could use a little repainting and more serious matters like money and our baby and work.

If our baby is an early-ish riser, I hope we continue through the summer and into the fall, before the mornings get dark and cold again.

  1. Awww, I remember those times. Walks were always such a fun thing with Gwen. And she continued to ride in the stroller with Blaine until her 5th birthday (when literally she could no longer fit). It's hard right now because I can't go out on walks because there is not enough room. Gwen doesn't know how to ride her bike yet but as soon as she does I look forward to resuming daily walks/runs(gag). I'm jealous! Just try to time your kids so that when you have three the oldest one can ride a bike and you'll be fine ;) Or buy a triple jogger (can you imagine?)http://www.amazon.com/Safetech-Triple-Jogging-Stroller-Jogger/dp/B001HXWXTA

  2. I love walking with Torsten, although we are evening walkers rather than morning walkers. We have recently discovered that we live just over a mile from an entrance to the canal path that crosses most of Denver, so we walk down there with the dog and stroll along the canal for awhile, chatting. It's wonderful.

  3. I love, love, love going on walks. We go out just about every day that is nice (although right now that means going at about 3pm when it's nicest). And on the weekend Jeremy almost always comes with us. I love it.

And chances are pretty darn good your baby will be an early riser!

  4. Gracious, "before work" is probably my least favorite time of the day, and that includes "that agonizing stretch right before leaving from work." Good on you!

  5. You can walk/run, be pregnant and still carry on a conversation with your husband? You can do this for 3 miles in the morning before you go to work?! You are amazing, Janssen! Really! I want to be like you when I grow up! I guess I should pick up the pace since I'm in my 40s now!

  8. There is something majestic about an early morning walk. Find a good stroller and roll with the baby!!

  9. I recently started walking home from work a few days a week. I realized that it takes me 15 minutes to ride the bus and 35 minutes to walk home. The 15 minutes is a sunk cost, so it's like I get 35 minutes of exercise for only 20 minutes. It's like having a coupon for exercise!

Plus, it's a good excuse to enjoy good weather before holing up in my apt for the evening.

  12. Early morning walks are one of my favorite things, too. George and I get out most mornings and Andrew accompanied us many times in the stroller until he was big enough to walk and later ride his bike. I hope you can keep up the tradition. It is still the best time for G and I to catch up on things and enjoy each other's company.
