Brown Squirrel

Early this morning, I left for a week of camping with a bunch of teenage girls. Along with five other leaders, I'm responsible for 25 thirteen-year-old girls and another 6 sixteen and seventeen year old girls who act as junior leaders for the younger girls. We'll hike, stargaze, learn outdoorsy skills, swim, and probably come home filthy.

Also, this is Texas, so it will likely be extremely hot. And we're going south toward Houston, so the humidity will, I expect, be out of this world.

I went to Girls Camp five times as a teenager and loved it every time, but it's been seven years since I last went and I'm thrilled to be going again, even if I am a bit nervous that I'll forget something vital or that the girls will find out that, despite my efforts to hide it, I'm a giant nerd.

I like to camp in general - I am young enough that sleeping on the ground doesn't bother me at all, I love s'mores, and I'm still in awe of how beautiful the stars look when they aren't drowned out by the city lights.

I just hope no one tries to talk me into doing dreadlocks because, friends, I have done it at girls camp before and considering that I have approximately zero hair and am blond, it makes me look frighteningly bald. There shall not be pictures.

  1. Sounds great except for the heat and humidity. The fact that people do this for other people's kids is one of the things on the you are going to heaven side of the ledger.

  3. Oh, you'll have a blast.

Be as nerdy as you possibly can. And be proud of it. You're there to show those girls that it's OK to just be exactly who they are. You'll do great!

My ward is going this week.

    I'm a little jealous...

  5. Oh fun, I have some very good memories from Girls Camp. However, we didn't camp in Texas and that might have changed things!

  6. Fun! I hope it goes great. I can empathize with you about the heat and humidity. When we lived in Houston, we did a Laurels trip to North Padre. It was in August and we camped in tents. I don't think I slept a wink!

  7. That sounds like so much fun. I love camping, but not so much sleeping on the ground. I never went to camp so I'm full of romantic notions about it all.

  8. So they have internet out there?

I'm glad it will be hot there, I think it's better that what our YW just endured...They were scheduled for the first week open in the mountain in Utah, there was still snow, and they were FREEZING the entire time!!! Oh and it was rainy the whole week (Utah weather has been so weird lately, rainy for like 2 1/2 weeks straight!)

But that sounds like a lot of fun and the girls will love having you up there.

I just got released from my YW calling. I had a lot of fun with them the past year and a half.

Remember when we wanted to be chaperons for the Church History tours, that would have been so fun. Have you ever thought about doing it with Bart?

  9. Good Luck! I loved Girl's Camp when I was younger, and my sisters just got back and I felt a little nostalgic hearing about how hot and dirty they were, and all the drama. I'm sure I'll get to go back one day, so I should just enjoy the break for now.

    Have fun!

  12. I remember Girls Camp in Texas. We finally started going up to Oklahoma (not far from Dallas), but it was still hotter than is naturally bearable. Hope you can take some fans with you!

  15. Haha. I think you should do dreadlocks and then post pictures because, quite frankly, the idea makes me giggle excitedly. And lets be honest, my amusement is the most important thing!!

  16. Hooray for girl's camp! I went as a leader a few years ago... and I think it's even more fun than as a girl! Enjoy!
