Scar Shoulder

Some people have cool scars.

I have ugly scars.

Two days after I got home from my freshman year in college, my mom was going to Puerto Rico and I was supposed to drive her to the airport to catch her 8:00 a.m. flight. Stupidly, I stayed up until about 2 a.m. the night before with some friends from high school, so when my alarm went off at around 5:30 a.m., I was not exactly feeling wide awake.

I've always had trouble with dizziness and feeling sick to my stomach in the morning, so it wasn't unusual that I felt lousy that morning.

My bedroom at my parents' house is downstairs, right off the living room, and as I walked from my bedroom to the kitchen, I started feeling really dizzy. And then I passed out right into the fireplace. Our fireplace had a raised hearth made of tile that came to a sharp lip and I hit it with my shoulder. It cut right through my shirt and into my shoulder so cleanly that there was hardly any blood. Just a big freaking gash.

One trip to the ER, ten stitches, and three months later, I had this lovely reminder of the summer after my freshman year.

Anyone else got cool or ugly scars? Or at least a better story than being an anemic wimp who can't stay standing?

  1. Ahh I have done that three times sadly- (I too am an anemic wimp) I passed out on the top of the 'black hole' ride at wet n' wild- once in the shower and the last time when I was super dehydrated after having Hailyn and passed out when she woke up for a midnight feeding- yeah- it sucks passing out because you never know what you are going to hit! ahh! So I have two scars from two seperate occasions (matching scars) on each wrist from baking cookies on two separate occasions. I also borrowed Calli's shoes to go hiking in Zion's once and her feet are a size bigger than mine and had NO grip and I slid down the side of the mountain and myentire left leg was destroyed- gravel leaves in it- yuck- I have a scar on my left calve from that- bummer. I also have a scar on my inside right arm from crashing into a wall rock climbing- I do not like my scars at all (esp. the wrist ones-yuck!) at least the other ones are cool(er) stories!

  2. I also have a pretty nasty scar on my shoulder. I tried to ride an old-skool scooter down a steep hill with no hands, and I hit a manhole. I seriously looked like Wesley in The Princess Bride when he got bit by the R.O.U.S. Le sigh.

  4. Is this the scar you were trying to show off that one time when you almost took your shirt off at the office party? And Kyle died from embarrassment? Good times. Good times.

  5. On the subject of anemic wimpery, I had to have a 6 hour blood test done, and after the first hour, I passed out when the lab tech wasn't looking and ended up sprawled out all over the floor with a big gash where the needle had ripped out. Gross, I know. I still had to do the last five hours, too.

  7. I, too, was an anemic wimp. I don't know how many times I passed out. The doctor finally told me never to jump up really fast - no matter what. Sometimes people would think I wasn't very swift, polite, or helpful, but too bad. (At least they didn't have to deal with a passed out female! PE teachers didn't like it, either, but I'd passed out in PE more than once.) No scars to show for it, though.

My scars are from cat scratches, very mild acne (which I still have), and from when I had the chicken pox when I was 4 or 5 years old. Oh, and the scars from two c-sections and a hysterectomy. Oh, so lovely - Not! It's kind of weird that all the burns, gashes, and scrapes I've gotten haven't left scars.

Taking iron helped, but the only thing that completely cured the anemia and "light-headedness" was having a hysterectomy.

Still can't go on a roller coaster!

  8. I just want to know if your mom made it to Puerto Rico?

  9. One scar. 1.5 inches long. Left inside ring finger. Smashed in a garbage can while cleaning up at a church. Lots of blood. I remember the purple juice stuff they made me soak it in right before they stuck monstrously long needles on either side of my finger.

  10. I have a lamer story for you, to make you feel better. I was at college, unpacking from summer break, when I heard one of my friends in the hall. I ran out to welcome her back, and scraped the inside of my left knee on the corner of a desk drawer that I had open. I still have a big long scar that looks like a surgical scar.

  11. I already posted my big scar, but that one of yours is a doozy!

  12. I may have mentioned this one before, but, in fifth grade I was talking to a teacher after school. I took a few steps backwards and cut my calf on the exhaust pipe of a car that had backed into a parking space. I'm terrified of needles, so, when the doctor gave me an option, I decided to let him bandage the wound up and let it heal on its own rather than get sewn up with stitches. Now I have a cool/disgusting (take your pick)scar 2-3 inches long and tinged with blue.

When I was about 9 I sat on the hot gate-thing in front of our fireplace. I was only wrapped in a towel, so there was direct contact with skin. I was out of school for a few days with bad burns (and made my mom and best friend SWEAR not to tell anyone why) but enough time has lapsed so that I no longer have a scar.

  13. When I was in Costa Rica, I got a small cut on my hand from some broken glass. Well, that cut got infected, and central american medicine is not... um... medicine. Rather than disinfecting and medicating they took a soldering iron and just cut underneath the wound and cauterized it while two man-nurses held me down.

    Worst part: No Lollipop

  14. I landed on my face in a bike accident. It was really bad and my parents wouldn't let me look at myself in the mirror for almost a week, but luckily no apparent scarring. I do have a moon-shaped scar on the tip of my middle finger from grabbing my moms razor. I still have no feeling on or around the scar.

  15. Ohh! I love scar stories!

    1. I fell down a short flight of stairs on practically the last day of my mission in Spain. I now have a lovely scar on my left shin from the huge chunk that the edge of the step took out of my skin (and out of my bone!).

    3. Full-on collision with a biker on one of the ped paths on BYU campus - scar on my left knee from the experience. I am now deathly afraid of bikes.

  16. I love scars. I think they are neat. One of my very favorite movie scenes is in Jaws when Richard Dryfus and Robert Shaw are comparing scars on the boat, and Roy Scheider looks down at his appendectomy scar and decides not to share.

My tragic accidents have left no really visible scars... All I have now are dumb knee surgery scars, and really, how often do I wear something above my knees?

  17. Wow, that scar looks a whole lot better than the last time I saw it! Time does heal all wounds. And yes, I did make it to PR on time (Dad and Merrick took Janssen to the hospital). What a good mother I am. I was on my way to relinquish my title of Mother of the Year. Good one, huh?

  18. Well, anyone who has seen me lately has seen my scar - unless they caught me on a day I was wearing a turtleneck (not likely). Not as pretty a color as yours. Partial thyroidectomy, three years ago, during my first pregnancy. Will it ever turn into the pale pink that yours has? I hope so!

  19. Long time lurker, but I think I'm commenting for the first time.

That's a pretty good scar, but at least it faded. I've got scars galore...between growing up in the boondocks and playing body contact sports, it happens.

Lets see what I can come up with...scar on the top of my right hand from climbing a fence and jumping down while my hand was caught on the top. Nail through the bottom of my foot. 10 stitches from a slice of a hockey skate on my leg. A small one in my left eyebrow, from a hockey fight. There's more, but thats the highlights.

    Did I mention I'm a girl? Really, I am.
