I don’t think I mentioned it previously, but Bart’s parents and Andrew came to visit this last weekend for a few days. They’d last come down almost exactly two years ago for Thanksgiving, so we did some different things this time around and had a delightful time.
We spent nearly all day last Saturday in San Antonio.
There was the Alamo, of course.
And a lunch at the River Walk Hard Rock Cafe (mmm, brisket sandwiches).
And then I insisted we go to the San Antonio Public Library which has recently been completely redone.
We spent some good times in the Children’s section (of course).
I made Bart check out some Braille books. Awesome.
We also investigated the “Art in San Antonio” bull.
Bart thought it needed some modifications:
And there was a special exhibit of World War One posters (Bart’s dad teaches a class on WWI in London, which both Bart and I took). So that was fantastic. (Also, I’m pretty sure I need a little art gallery in my house).
And there is a stunning Chihuly chandelier hanging over the main section of the library. If that’s not amazing, I don’t know what is. Although, they probably had to fire three or four full-time librarians to afford it.
And then, back at the ranch house, there were some casual guitar lessons:
It was a lovely trip, and we were sorry to see them go. Fortunately, we had a nice Indian lunch at the Clay Pit, which made the departure a bit easier to stomach.

Fun pictures and fun family time 🙂 I love the Chihuly!

Uh, apologies for the silly question, but is Andrew related to you all somehow? 🙂
I love that libraries are required parts of your sight-seeing.

Andrew looks so TALL! I didn’t notice it until that last picture of him and Bart with the guitar…holy cow.
That library looks awesome…I will certainly help contribute to your art gallery in your house 🙂

It took me a couple of looks to figure out what Bart was doing. Very amusing. I like that you have 7 photos of the library and 1 of the Alamo. Very you.

I love that bull! I like that people will go to a library with you.

My favorite memory of the Hard Rock Cafe in SA is that was where I saw the Stayin Alive video the first time. Why do I remember that? Check it out on YouTube. You’ll never forget either.
On my 27th birthday, a Mariachi band sang “Feliz Cupleanos” to me on the Riverwalk during dinner. Several onlookers joined it, exuberantly. It is one of my favorite birthday memories. And the food was fantastic.

Oh, if it’s a real Chihuly, it cost more than three or four librarians salaries, unless we are spreading it out over a LONG time. Chihuly is the opposite of cheap. Being a public library though, all the numbers aught to be accessible.

Aw, WWI with Dr. Tate! That makes me homesick for London.

Not to worry about librarians’ salaries – the Chihuly Fiesta Tower was funded through a grant from the Russell Hill Rogers Foundation, which supports ONLY art endeavors. The sculpture was a gift from the San Antonio Public Library Foundation for the Library’s 100th birthday in 2003.
Staff salaries come from the City General Fund.
And you need to come back – you missed our Botero horse in the lobby!

Love Love LOVE the Chihuly!!!
And I love the rest of the San Antonio pics, I have a few cousins in TX and I keep meaning to go visit….the library alone has convinced me it must happen.

(Um, PS, my “word verification” is “balph” which, for whatever reason, has given me a case of the giggles….seriously.)

I follow on Insta, but I missed church today staying home with a sick kid, so I got a chance to read some of your blog past just books. Saw a link to San Antonio stuff, and I came across this post. This is where we now live, and yes, the Central library is fantastic. It is a bit far for our regular journeys, but we love our little library closer to us, and you can get books for any library in the system brought to our closer one, so it provides a multitude of possibilities.
