All The Small Things

I am excellent at being excited.

When my parents announced in December that we were going to go back to Disneyland this year, I was thrilled. From Christmas until the actual trip, ten weeks later, I was always monitoring how close the trip was from that very moment. "Only six weeks until we go!" "Twelve days from today, we'll be in Disneyland!" (I attempt not to think "in five days from now, we'll be home from Disneyland and the trip, which we haven't even left on, will be over" because that's just depressing).

Bart, well, he doesn't get excited until we're actually on the airplane, so I figure it's my duty now to be excited enough for the both of us.

And this excitement is not limited to big things like cross-country all-expenses-paid family vacations.

About three weeks ago, I planted two big pots of herbs on the back porch. I watered them and I watched them. I went outside every day to see if anything had sprouted. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Finally, on Sunday, seven little green spouts had poked out. Yesterday? Eleven. Today? Thirty-four. I have mentioned this fact approximately fifty times to Bart in the last few days. I'm seriously THAT excited about it.

You wouldn't even believe how thrilled I am that the lily Bart gave me for Valentine's Day last year, that I planted in the front yard, is now starting to poke up out of the dirt.

The real reason I'm thinking about this, though, is that today is Tuesday. And I look forward to Tuesday all week, every week because it's the day that the dollar theater posts the new movies that will be opening that weekend.

Yes, I really do look forward to that.

It's the small things in my life, obviously.

  1. Ha! That's awesome. I know how you feel about the dollar movies. I always like it when something good comes there.

  2. Amen! I think the happiest people in life are the ones who get excited over the small seemingly silly things.

  3. Rick and I share the same excitement roles as you and yours, it seems. Congrats on your lily.

  4. I'm not easily excitable, but little green things sprouting out the earth will always do it for me. It really is SO SO exciting to see something that YOU planted begin to grow. I was even pointing out to Roman today the two new leaves that are unfurling on one of my houseplants.
Also, I wanna see which new movies are coming to the dollar theater too. How do I do that?

  5. I love the "small" things, too. On the way to work this winter and spring almost every day we have seen over 100 elk. On the way home we see probably 50 elk and 50 deer. Today, there were lots of tiny lambs and calves - so cute.

I, too, make a big deal of things like the rose bush by our front door. These roses have the best "rose" fragrance ever. I have probably mentioned them to my husband 3-4 times a day (while they are blooming) for the last 20 years.

Sorry, I just had to share!

    Glad your herbs are growing!

  6. Sounds like you subscribe to the same philosophy as Blaine---that anticipation is the best part. He claims that Christmas Eve is better than Christmas because anticipation is at its height! He loves loking forward to things much more than he loves the actual thing :). I am happy about your herbs!

  7. I love getting excited about things too. I honestly have people tell me stuff just to hear my enthusiasm! I also love looking forward to things, it's half the fun.

I forget when you get a house you have to take care of things like the yard, plants, etc. Good job! That's a whole load of new things I have no idea how to do.

I got my hair done last night by Bon Losee students at an enrichment and guess who did my hair? Laural Wood from our church history trip! We spent the whole time talking about people and what they were up to, very fun!

  8. haha - I just planted herbs too! and whenever a new one sprouts (like, a lot), I have to tug on Ty's shirt like a little kid and say, "Look! The baby herbs are sprouting!" Okay maybe I'm a bit extreme, but I love getting excited about things :)
