Boston was fantastic. Bart said, on the last day of our trip, “I think this is the most fun trip we’ve taken together.” When I questioned him, he amended “except for our cruise, of course.”
And it really was that fun. We visited Lexington and Concord, Salem, and, of course, Boston itself. We saw tons of great things and just had a wonderful time together.
We rented a car and drove down from Vermont and New Hampshire which was breathtakingly gorgeous (of course I have no pictures of this drive because we were both too busy trying to stay awake).
Also, when Bart bought his new laptop back in May, it came with a GPS tracker and Microsoft’s “Streets and Trips.” We will never travel without this again. It was brilliant. We could find restaurants in the vicinity, find a toll-free route to our destination, and see when we’d gone off course (it did start having some serious trouble in downtown Boston where it could not tell where we were and kept leaping around the map, which made it very difficult to read the actual map and figure out what to do).
I LOVED Boston. I LOVE Washington D.C., but I may love Boston more. It was just so gorgeous in every way. There is SO much to see and do and we’ll definitely be going back in the future.A few highlights:
– This bookstore in Salem. Hello Heaven
– How hilarious we found it that there were Dunkin’ Donuts on literally every street corner. We finally went our last night – alas, my donut was stale.
– The Freedom Trail, especially this sign at the State House:
– Finishing the Freedom Trail by climbing this (wait, this wasn’t a highlight – I almost had a heart attack walking up the 294 stairs. I’m clearly way out of shape):
– Going to Harvard. This was so surreal. Also, we parked in a spot that may not have been legal, but we didn’t get a ticket, so this was DEFINITELY a highlight for me. Also, we didn’t have to pay $25 for a real parking spot.
The cold was terrifying, though. It hovered around 30-40 degrees for most of our trip (I KNOW, don’t tell me that that is not very cold – to me, that is nealy artic weather) and I had to restrain myself from cheering when we decended into Austin and they announced that the local temperature was 77 degrees. I stripped off my sweater and and jacket and stood outside in a t-shirt while I waited for Bart to bring around the car. I do love the warm weather.
If you’re interested in looking at all the pictures we took (and I won’t be offended if you aren’t), you can see them here:

Yay – I’m really glad you liked it. I feel like Boston is ‘my city’ so everyone should feel the same way about it that I do.
Did you love Salem? I know exactly which book store that is and I love it too!
And yes… there really are Dunkin Donuts on every street corner!

Geez, it looks cold. Note to self: visit Boston in JUNE.
Also, join flickr! It’ll change your life!

Looks like you guys had a great time. Did you go just for fun?
I also noticed the immense number of Dunkin Donuts shops, and the Californian in me thought–What? In this health conscious age there are still donut shops in business!
My favorite place in Boston is Boston Commons.

I miss the East Coast so much in the fall. The pictures are beautiful!

I love Boston SO much. I go through pangs of missing New England every fall and my thick Connecticut blood went a-pumping at the sight of all of that Revolutionary history. Not that we don’t have that in the Philly area, but it’s just different. I was dragged all over that Freedom Trail when I was a kid and I feel you on those steps. If/when you go back, please go to the Science Museum, which is one of my favorite places on earth, and take a duck tour!

I’m torn between two conflicting responses:
1) Beautiful pictures. Boston looks so cool and you’ve *almost* made me regret that we took the job offer in Austin and not Boston.
2) Oh wait, it looks cold and Marshall said everyone was mean when he interviewed in Boston… and to be honest, everything you did in Boston just screams “I’m a history buff!” I, however, am not.
Glad you guys had fun though.

Looks like so much fun! My sister went to Boston last week and I’m jealous!
Meleah says
Wow, that looks like you both had a lot of fun. All those books, did you end up buying any?
Sheyenne says
Looks like lots of fun. I had no idea that all those famous people were buried there. (Does that totally show my ignorance?) That book store looks really cool to take pictures in, not so cool to actually find a book.

I love Boston too. Was there any special reason that made you to decide to go to Boston instead of somewhere else? (I’m just curious.)

You are SO beautiful Janssen. I just love you.

That bookstore! I’d be in heaven too.

To comment on probably the least consequential part of your blog: Dan and his family are dunkin donuts fanatics, I on the other hand seem to always get the stale donuts. If you get the chance to go again sometime, try their muffins!

I took a look at all of your pics. You’ve got some good ones, but my fave is you in the bookstore surrounded by books!

What great pictures! You look terrific! We should really go on a trip together…remember how awesome of a time we had in London? It would be double that much fun with husbands!

That picture of you in the bookstore is to die for!

great photos for what sounds like a great trip! I have some fun boston memories too (except I went with my ex the first yime). We walked the freedom trail thinking it was a circle (!) so when we got to the end and realized we had to go all the way back. Let’s just say my high heeled boots were not a good choice. I have also hung out on the MIT campus with my hubby (he went there) and I felt like the dumbest person there…it’s all relative, right!
(PS I also hate declaring we are going out of town, even though I have bars on all my windows so you couldn’t break in if you want to! yes I live in the hood.)
