Tonight, we’re going to a Halloween Party/Dinner. I shall be bringing these: Chocolate Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars.
And while we’re on the topic of food, I stupidly ignored Kayla’s advice yesterday to follow my heart and order chicken fingers. I ordered some soft chicken tacos (dumb! so dumb!)
But they? Gave me greasy ground beef tacos in a deep-fried crispy shell. I ate a few bites and started feeling ill. And I felt ill all evening. I still felt a bit sick this morning (I finally feel better – the cure appeared to be 5 mini pumpkin scones).
I almost called in sick today, but didn’t because I’m a good person and frankly, I wasn’t vomitting or anything.
But if I was going to take a sick day today?
I would have slept in and then stayed in bed and read for a while.
I would have read blogs at my leisure.
I would have gone for a nice walk outside because the weather is gorgeous.
I would have had lunch with Bart (not at the restaurant we ordered lunch from yesterday, of course).
I would have curled my hair nicely (instead of in the mad frenzy I did this morning as I tried to both bake a cheesecake and get to work on time).
I would have watched “Great Expectations.”
I would have taken a little trip to the library.
I would have read my latest Martha Stewart magazine.
I would have worn my slippers all day long.
What would you do with a day off?
Happy Halloween!

I would finish unpacking and cleaning the house. And then in my imaginary world, I’d still have time left to do stuff, so I’d finish one of the blankets I’ve been working on and watch an episode of Friday Night Lights. Then I’d finish reading The Fox. And bake a butterscotch mascarpone cake.

I actually did take a sick day today … and yesterday … and Monday. The sad part is that I’m sick enough that I’m not able to do anything but lay around in misery. I am catching up on blogs in between naps (I seem to last about 15 minutes before needing a nap). And I am wearing my slippers. I’ve been able to read a little bit, but even that isn’t so much fun when this sick. I know, poor me. But, if I could actually do something I would take a walk since the smoke from the fires (So. Calif.) is no longer reaching my neighborhood; I would get my car washed; I would go to the Ulta store and buy a fantastic new lipstick; and I would take a trip to the library :o)

In my last two jobs my presence was not essential to the running of the office, so I chose to have a liberal definition of “sick.” Not that I ever lied and just took work off for no reason, but if I felt myself starting to get sick, I might take the day off in the name of “preventative medicine” . . .”emotional health” might work as well. I didn’t abuse the privilege, but since sick days are there for the taking, I didn’t feel that I had to be so sick I couldn’t stand before I would call in sick.
On a related note, I don’t understand those people that don’t take all of their vacation days. There’s lots more to life than work people! I will always take all of my vacation days and still yearn for more.

Who needs sick days when you’re a mom of just one sweet, little, girl named Reagan???
Pretty much everyday I do what I would do on a sick day (which I also took liberally while teaching, if I felt the tiniest bit sick I would say I needed a mental health day).Anyway, my list:
I take an hour nap
I read books while rocking Reagan
I watch Ellen(yes, I like that show)
I leisurely get ready (This is Reagan’s favorite part of the day, she is mesmerized by the sound of the shower and blow dryer)
We take walks, we go on hikes, and go roller blading
I write emails and read blogs(you would have never thought 3 mo. ago I even knew how to turn on my computer)
I write in my journal everyday!!!!
“Sick days”, no way, I prefer “mom days”

This is timely because I AM taking a day off! Yesterday afternoon my throat started feeling scratchy and then I ended up with a sore throat, congestion, and a fever. So I stayed home. Because no one likes a sick grumpy pregnant lady on Halloween.
What did I do with my day off today?
Painted picture frames for the Relief Society bulletin board while I watched Young and Innocent (an old Hitchcock), embroidered a onesie while watching What Lies Beneath, ate macaroni and cheese while doing a load of laundry, and now I think I might take a shower and renew my vehicle registration. It wasn’t a very exciting day, but it was kinda productive. And it was nice to just lay on my couch all day, I’ll be honest.
Sad part of today: I left my house long enough to drop off a cream cheese chocolate chip ball for our work Halloween potluck. A potluck I was unable to attend. Which means they ate it without me. Sigh.

oooh, I love sick-days-that-are-not-SICK-days. I love just having the day off, somewhere in the middle of the week, with no “Saturday Errands” to run…just have a day to myself. Sigh.

I would read until I fell asleep, wake up, and repeat. Oh, and throw in some chicken noodle soup. This wishful routine occurs on days off whether or not I’m sick, now that I think about it.
Do you have the recipe for pumpkin scones? Because a week has already gone by and I haven’t made something with pumpkin and I am beginning to shake. I may just need to make some dip to get myself through it.

the sad thing is that I just had 2 sick days, but I was so sick I did NOTHING!
I love “mental health” days though 🙂

I’m with Melanie on the liberal application of “sick day.” I haven’t even been the tiniest bit sick here at my new job yet and haven’t gotten to use a sick day….but I will…one of these days. And when I do…I for sure will be sleeping in, reading, watching one of my favorite girls movies that Phil would not enjoy (you know, Anne of Green Gables, Emma, Return to Me…) and possibly eating some mango or raspberry hagen daas sorbet.

I like RA’s description of reading and sleeping.

I’d pay someone to take my three kids, then surprise my husband with a lunch date (for which he magically would be allowed to leave the hospital for one hour), go home, nap, drink mint tea, snuggle in a warm blanket for a good chick flick, fiddle around on the guitar, and edit photos.
