No Old Person Left Behind

So, I try not to laugh when people say or do foolish things about or with computers, since there is certainly plenty I don't know and I wouldn't want to be laughed at but today two small things cracked me up:

1) I get such a huge laugh out of people who still ask "Are any of the letters capitalized" in regards to an email address or a URL. Ha! Folks. . .it doesn't matter. (If you didn't know this, feel free to consider this a Public Service Announcement). Poor gal who asked me; you sounded so surprised when I told you that it was fine either way. Emails to and and will all go to the same in-box. It's almost like a miracle.

2) I called someone today asking them to email me something. A few minutes later, this nice lady called me back telling me that the website didn't work and she kept getting an error message. "That was an email address I gave you." Here is my excellent and handy rule of thumb regarding email addresses v. URL: If there is a "@," it's an email address. Ah, yes, this rule has served me well. It should do the same for you. You might want to write that on a little post-it note and put it on your computer screen, right next to your list of user names and passwords so that someone who breaks into your house can hack all your accounts before they take your flat panel TV. I'm just sayin'.

  1. This made me laugh SO HARD! Thank you :) I hope I don't get like that when I'm older...

  2. The email address one is so true! Even with people I work with, our email addresses are lastnamefirst is STANDARD..but do you beleive people in my company still asks, what is your email address?? In those cases I wonder if I should just mention the obvious OR those thingamagigies known as the company directory?

And my co-worker, well she's just a bothersome individual. We work with spreadsheets a lot, she is just not used to adding on a new workbook to the spreadsheet, she'd rather create multiple books for the same project.

Okay...sorry for the long comment, but you got me started.

  3. Hahaha, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Another gripe is when people put a 'www' in front of their e-mail address when they try to give it to you. Um, no.

I guess we sort of think these details are a given nowadays, but then I have to remind myself....there are still people out there who don't feel comfortable with computers.

  4. Well, I'm sure you remember the days of working at the B-Y. Seriously. This is my life. Daily.

    "How did you do that?"
"Well, I knew you wanted to print it, so I hit the 'print' button." Ha ha ha. Okay, so it's not (usually) that bad, but you know what I'm saying.

  5. Oh, so funny. I remember 8-hour days at Freshman Academy spent helping "Mom" register for the kids' classes. Hilarious and frustrating. But really, how are they supposed to just know that stuff unless we tell them? We have a duty.

  6. My 80ish grandmother sends all her emails as attachments. I'm not sure what she's doing or why noone has told her how to fix it.

I try to respond to most comments, so it will make my day if your email address is linked in your profile. If you're not sure if it's linked, you can add it by following these instructions.
